ClockRune Isle

ClockRune Isle

Project Description

As my typographical capstone project, we were tasked to explore how to showcase typography through a collection of items that transcends the digital and physical space.

The Process? I began this project by illustrating character designs on Procreate, each with complex backstories that lead them to create a group of 3 explorers tasked with discovering the uncharted lands of ClockRune Isle. I created a topographical map of the island using grains of rice, sketching the outline, and assigning elevation based on the rice density. Lastly, I laid out the map design on a travel guide brochure with board game rules included.

The Result? An 18" by 24" brochure with map and rules included, 3 character cards included in an envelope, a rock meant to be used as a dice block, a handwritten letter from Lumn Darkwood, Umber's father, and Umber's travel journal. All these items meant to be seen as a collection and as an immersive art experience.

Umber Darkwood

Umber grew up in a family of professional explorers, so his single father was absent for most of his life. His father, Lumn Darkwood, is famous in the exploration industry, known to be the first person to discover the uncharted land named ClockRune Isle. With his father absent, Umber had to grow up quickly; fend for himself, learn to take care of himself, and ultimately, put himself and his survival first. He grew up cold-hearted and morally grey, finding it difficult to put trust in others. He got skilled at stealing, swiftly running away from the scene, stealthing, and using long-range weaponry. One fateful day, his father passes away, and the council of Coin Kingdom calls upon Umber to join a team of two other allies to take up his father’s role and finish exploring ClockRune Isle.

I will help others, but avoid serious personal risks or loyalties that don't benefit me.

Estelle Caduceus

Estelle grew up in a high-class family of nobles, and lived a comfort able life of wealth and luxury. However, she grew up with a humble, pure heart that kindness and compassion are her biggest strengths, not money or power. She’d often be found nurturing her garden while practicing her healing magic. Born as an Aasamir, she always had an innate magic to her, and growing up her family would encourage the growth of her powers. Through training, she got skilled at healing and light magic, able to support her allies and notice when someone is in need of ailment. The council was then recruiting a team of 3 skilled individuals to explore an uncharted land, and she was easily the council’s top choice. With her skillset and eagerness to grow, she humbly accepted the invitation

Hector Armstrong

Hector grew up with an extraordinary amount of natural strength, which inspired him to train and build muscle, raw strength, and wield heavy weaponry. As a Half-Orc, he loves play wrestling with his 8 siblings, inspiring him to participate in Gladiator duels for cash prizes. Even though he earns a good amount of reward money from his public duels, he more enjoys the thrill of battle. However, he grew up with an innate sense of courage, honor, and justice, earning him an easygoing, yet gullible, personality. The council of Coin Kingdom admired his raw strength, power, and sense of justice, and asked him to join a team of 3 individuals to explore the uncharted land of ClockRune Isle. With reward money promised, he clumsily accepted the challenge.

How to Play

This board game acts as an interactive art installation that gets you talking with a group of people and working together to name each part of the map, creating a different outcome for every group that participates.

1. At the start of each turn, a player rolls the rock runes to determine which unexplored region they attempt to reach next. The exact direction and distance is up to the collective team’s instinct — as all great cartographers improvise.

2. When your explorer arrives at a location, you must give it a name. Discuss with your party, then write it in the Atlas journal. Reroll the directional rocks after completion to name your next landmass.

3. If two named regions touch, flow into one another, or share a coastline, players decide together whether they belong to the same territory or opposing dominions. Take notes on the agreed turf separations in your journal.

4. The team “wins” when every island, river, mountain, shore, or any landmass of the group’s choosing has earned a name. Once the map is fully named, the party must each sign the final registry — completing the first official ClockRune Isle Atlas!

Lumn's Letter

The last words Umber ever received from his late father, Lumn Darkwood, after he passed away while exploring ClockRune Isle. The letter's intention is to further describe the lore surrounding the island to players, as well as how the connection the 3 characters share while adding an emotional past to Umber.
